"The work of the critic is founded solely on the observation and examination of isolated cases. Each new work, each artist breaking through the clouds is a riddle, a phenomenon whose vital principle must be discovered through perseverance. Critics receive their ideas from objects, they do not apply them to the object." ...

"At each instant and before each new artwork, critics must be ready and willing to question themselves and any and all critical certainties; indeed, the greatest wager a critic will have to pull off is to assimilate the most varied theories so as to best put them to understand a work of art."

The Genesis of the art critic. Albert Dresda, Editions de l'ENSBA.

"In her drawings, sculptures and collages, Katarina Burin (born Slovakia 1976) delves into the history of architecture and design, both famous and commonplace, with an eye to how images and documents both represent the past and live in the world today.

For Ambassador Suites, she plays on common emblems of the city: storefronts and display windows. Inspired by a mysterious window display at an "Import/Export" business in a neighboring street in Paris, Burin assembled different bodies of work in a loose evocation of a travel agency. Imbedded in this idea is not only "travel" but "tourism" and the selling of leisure. For the window of the gallery, Burin designed a multi-part screen structure, combining fragments of imagery with replicas of building models from the other storefront. The forms of the screens are mimicked in the Leisure Ensembles, sculptural shelves that present found images as both movable and interwoven. Upstairs, drawings made by hand spraying ink through stencils, recreate images from hotel and leisure industry matchbooks.

At the same time Burin has curated the work of two other artists into her conception of travel, advertising and tourism. Josh Shaddock and  Lisa Tan"

Here is an Eric Corne (that we appreciate a lot) of joyful humor nowadays. He delivers us a new series of big size canvas even more unbridled than last year. It begins with a hilarious title of exhibition confirmed with his "on its own" genre. The proportions are mental, the perspectives are multiple, the subjects are anachronistic until the pose of the color, nothing is as the others, everything there is extraordinary. Eric Corn's style is born.

Guillaume Leblon at the domaine of Kerguehennec

New immersion into the Universe of Guillaume Leblon.
This exhibition gives us a series of clues, the
artist's path of work, the places that may have
prompted the important work's of the artist a few
years later, and by this showing that the life of an
artist is an all.
For example,For example we have a very interesting
video from 2000 with quite detailed views, showing in
the forefront of an abandoned villa the villa
"Cavrois" which happens to be a construction of the
architect Mallet Stevens (1832)Through the lens of
Leblon, the rubble, the cracked walls take on an
extraordinary importance. Fascination with the wall,
and ideas linked to the cracks will be seen again in
the 2006-2007 monumental work "Raum". The only thing
we regret is that the exhibition is a bit limited in
size in view of the fact that the hall would have
permitted Leblon freedom to show the diversity of his
subtle questionnings.ance extra-ordinaire.

Majestic Path: At not even 30 years old Loris Greaud
offers us such a mature path whose lucidity makes us
shiver.
"What does an exhibition or gesture produce? What does
an image or a form produce? What do we really give
birth to in this world?"these are the questions that
harass the artist . They approach the the bank of
the artists work that he cannot control, that does not
belong to him but belongs to those that ponder the
works, at the moment when we interpret it, when it
becomes ours.

For the process to work, he he offers us an
installtion of " living" machines that become
increasingly autonomous, evolving in a world where
there is nothing else but but them, until they
finally escape even the control of their conciever.

"220 days" Isabelle Cornaro, Aurelien Froment, Benoit Maire, Raphael Zarka at the Project Space of the GB agency
It is too bad that I did not get wind of this project earlier. The young gallery owners, the same who introduced Loris Greaud - have proposed to 4 young artists a place to present their new work over a long period - 220 days. There are constraints with such a collective exhibition - such as the coherency of works cohabiting the same space. And the length demands a particularly considerable production effort from the artists. But these are the ideal conditions for young artists. To be continued! Don't hesitate to ask questions to better understand .

"La Chasse au trésor" (Treasure hunt) Jean Le Gac, Archeology Museum

Unclassifiable artist who, one day, with Boltanski, decried the death of Art."So, how's it going with the death of Art" he delights in asking.

He wants to approach it differently, from the North face, with a work composed of texts, photographs and pastels. His particular treatment is via three entrances into his universe, one that has never got the same meaning depending on the combinations that the eye chooses. It is a question of ?the archaeologist's method, similar to that of the artist", he says "stirring up things from the past to understand the present.? An important exhibition that allows us to better understand where artists such as Sophie Calle are coming from, for instance.

Marc Desgrandschamps at the Zurcher Gallery

"They're all at the beach". This is the impression we get when looking through the new canvases of Desgrandschamps. The painter this time is concerned with urban organization, with as main characters..... the city, the buildings. But nevertheless we don't feel alone. The painters work is so powerful that at each new exhibition we feelstill empowered by the preceeding exhibition's works. If you include also the admirable brushworkof the artist which links to perfection his intention with his realization, the siezing effect is created of an empty space that still carries the trace of the stories that had taken place ther before.. What we see, empty roads and buildings, is not what we feel, rather a place filled to the brim with stories.
I remember the rare times that I have experienced this double reading of a work of painting - it was with a grand Turner and then with Rothko.

"220 jours" KATAMARI at the project space of the GB agency
in process of image
Isabelle Cornaro Julien Crépieux Mark Geffriaud Benoît Maire Benoît-Marie Moriceau Bruno Persat Raphaël Zarka

communiqué: Katamari is a video game in which a five centimeter prince has for mission to reconstruct stars, constellations and the moon, that his father, the king of the cosmos, has accidentally destroyed during a night of drunkenness. For that purpose, the small prince has to make roll a magic, highly adhesive ball, called Katamari, to collect more and more big objects (begining with a thimble to a mountain by way of school's students or cow) untill this ball becomes fair-sized to be a star. At the same time action and strategy game, Katamari is a fundamentally pacific and comtemplative game.

Think as an extension of the previous exhibition "...except maybe a constellation", "Katamari" borrows his title from the eponymic evolutionary work of Bruno Persat, as his work was inspired by the video game. In the way of a Katamari, the exhibition gather works on a principle of additions, retreats and movements linked from the situation created previously 220 days.

"Figures relatives" Nicolas chardon at the Jean Brolly Gallery

Here is a rebel abstraction..

It is the result of a rather fascinating approach of Nicolas Chardon. He paints in a scrupulously way squares or lines who are predetermine by the cloth who compose his canvass. A priori nothing really complicated except that the cloth streched out on the frame deforms the lines. The result is inefable, squares and rectangles are not straight, everything is line out. The usual rigourous and cold abstraction become here sensible and vibrating !

"Où le noir est couleur" (Where black is a colour) Joana Vasconcelos at the Galerie Nathalie Obadia

Galleries that offer such means of productions to their artists deserve to be applauded. It is only in feeling upheld in this manner that and artist can really give it their all. This exhibition perfectly reflects that spirit.

We knew that this young Portuguese artist handled monumental installations perfectly, but here we can really see her soul at work.

Take the time to stay in this deep dark room ? opposite ? with the backing sound of a fado (traditional lament cum love song) to the rhythm of which a sparkling blood-red heart dances and turns incessantly. This stylised heart is the exact representation of the traditional piece of jewellery given to young brides. The combination of the fado with this symbolic heart is poignant. Once this emotion has passed, amuse yourself by carefully looking at the elements that made up the piece.

"Please, be seated" Nicole Cohen at the Getty Center

Please Be Seated is a video installation by contemporary artist Nicole Cohen that allows you to interact with the Getty Museum's 18th-century French chairs.

The installation blends footage from decorative arts galleries in the Getty Museum and three French museums with live video captured by a surveillance camera. As you sit in reproductions of the original chairs, you become part of the installation, virtually entering historic recreations of 18th-century French spaces.

One of the most intesting artist these days. She works with all the "pomps" of the last centuries, in Europe and compares iwth the nowdays pomps. Does the ceremonial give the power ? that is the question ..

"Measuring your own grave" Marlene Dumas at MOCA

Wonderfull retrospective of the south african artist, Marlene Dumas.
Oil on canevas portraits from her very beginnings were you already see the technique of one brush strocke only exactly the one she uses on the paper right now.
Water colours on paper of the beginnigns are shown, heavy handed and  increasingly  more and more light and subltiles. We see obviously that she has woked very hard to obtain the simplicity you see on recent works. Must be seen.

Sun Xun at Hammer Museum
