Through November, 14th, 2009 / SANTA MONICA // USATamara Sussman at Rosamund Felsen Gallery
| | Rosamund Felsen gallery clik
| | | "Tamara Sussman's work is a richly layered combination of two practices: visual art and fiction writing (....) The text applied to the inside surface of the plexiglass of the frame? is a translucent layer hovering in front of the photograph and appears and disappears as the piece is viewed from different angles." When you enter in the gallery -room dedicated to "tremble"- you are so impressed by the subtlety of the artist work. It is a balance between fragility of the form battling with strength of the meaning.
|
Through November, 14th, 2009 / SANTA MONICA // USA Brendon Monroe at Richard Heller Gallery | | |
| Amazing work by this young artist from Berkeley. He should have been a novelist as well as he is a great painter because his whole work is about a strange story of men and women lost in a strange world. This world is drawn with lines that compose the landscape. This is incredible what he can create with these thin lines of acrylic! Theses lines make the volume because of the artist knowledge of colors laws , but these lines are also completely alive because they act in the landscape hiding persons or moving them etc... Unfortunately, for non resident persons, the works are pretty much better for real than on Internet!

Through October 30, 2009 / Paris // FRANCENicolas Buffe "Mutations merveilleuses de divers trucs" at Schirman& de Beaucé

| Solo show for this excellent artist. His paintings -only white colour on black board- are extremely detailed drawings. The whole looks like both decorative and narrative, taking ideas from the "grotesque". The artists picks up stories from legends and mythology "By adopting the ornamental structure of the Renaissance grotesques as a background to his compositions, Nicolas Buffe has chosen a type of decoration based essentially on his subjective choices : les grotesques are hybrids in which the most daring associations are permitted, if not recommended. It was these grotesques that defined the structure used by Moliere in his ESSAIS, which were a heteroclite mixture of citations and original texts; the grotesques that a sixteenth century author called ?pictorial daydreams?, in that they so imitated the thoughts that are shaped by our dreams. The goal of Buffe is much more serious than it first appears, but is instead of born of a ?serious game? so prized during the Renaissance, that conjugates pure invention, pleasure and knowledge."

A selection of some artworks collected by collector Antoine de Galbert at l'Espace François-Auguste Ducros
B.Ch

Through May 16th, 2009 /Culver City // LOS ANGELES Kim Mc Carthy chez Kim Light gallery

"Dan Graham: Beyond" at MOCA Grand avenue
| | "Dan Graham: Beyond is the first North American retrospective of the art of Dan Graham (b.1942, Urbana, Illinois), examining his entire body of work in a focused selection of photographs, film and video, architectural models, indoor and outdoor pavilions, conceptual projects for magazine pages, drawings and prints, and writings."
Very interesting exhibition that shows an artist must have a target when he searches, he thinks, he creates. Dan Graham has been obsessed all day long by the way a human being is seen and the way he sees himself. To dig more deeply in that direction he used all techniques: as mirrors, architecture and mirrors, camera and TV screens, three dimension as well as drawings or photography. Many artists of these days have to see this exhibition to understand the way they have to think and act to be an artist.

Through July 11th, 2009 /KÖLN /Allemagne"Dortoir des filles" Haidée Henry à la galerie Figge Von Rosen

"dortoir des filles" courtesy galerie figge von rosen "ballons" courtesy galerie figge von rosen | | "We show the large installation Dortoir des filles (2008), a work consisting of seven beds, hanging from the ceiling. The beds are poorly illuminated and they are covered with mattrasses filled with straw. From them water is dropping slowly into rusty buckets. The rhythm of the drops intonates a silent concert of tones, respectively of the necessities, anxieties, and longings of the girls that give the work a part of its title. The perception of the ensemble stimulates a bundle of associations that can have to do with the process of growing-up of young people, with emotions instigated by puberty, with mental or physical injuries, with hopes and lusts. However, these are associations that remain in the field of the implied and the contingent because of the high degree of abstraction of Henry's artistic language."
"One of the ca. 25 current drawings that we are showing too (all 2008, each 50 x 70 cm), comes back to the fate of the dead boar. However, the pitch of these drawings is not limited to negative emotions, but Haïdée Henry plays with the different possibilities of expression ? from tragic through ironic. Like many of her sculptures, the drawings are characterized by an oscillation between sex and eroticism, violence and tenderness, lust and anxiety, man and animal. Mythical creatures, beings of fairy tales that are not reduced to only one meaning, one identity, but that are giving us proofs for alternative ways of life."

Louis Vuitton associates its name with the most mysterious and original exhibit settled in Paris! This is the showing of three glyphic tablets from Easter Island: ?Rongo Rongo?. Never having been deciphered to date. These tablets were storage at the Vatican Museum (!) With these silent writings as a focal point, Espace Louis Vuitton is bringing together the works of 16 contemporary artists providing a series of different perspectives. You will find there all the ways of thinking to a topic by a contemporary artist. This is very interesting to see how they embrace such a topic really involved in the reflexion or not.

They are broken up ? sampled ? then placed in a world that is without antecedents, though in certain respects it does recall the strange, slightly cruel atmosphere of the Grimm brothers' tales. What interests Ziemke is not so much humans as their attitudes, not so much stories as their contexts ? and above all the indices, however derisory, of the successive steps that take a civilisation from a given historical era through to our own." This is also a strong culture with artists like in other countries in the world. And twice remarkable because it comes from a gallery owner very well known, international, who shows to us that to be a gallery owner is not only a business.mind. Through February 14, 2009 /Santa Monica, CAAmy Bennett " At the Lake" at Richard Heller gallery
Amy Bennett Search Party, 2008 18 x 24 Inches , Oil on panel courtesy Richard Hellker gallery clik
| | "Really charming" This is the very first impression you have when you see the paintings of Amy Bennett at the Richard Heller Gallery. You could leave because it seems too classic, but, as you are in the gallery, you look at the canvas more closely. You look at them all....and you fall in love with the paintings, with all of them. A very strange mood emerges from these simple themes of "quiet days on a lake". It doesn't look like other paintings. You feel something more or something less: a sort of vacuity, of timeless. The landscapes look like a place you know but not exactly, it could be... You search your mind.. You search on the canvas details that could remind you something. The only thing you discover is that it is an ideal landscape, like the life you dream sometimes, the holidays you would like have with your family and friends. The fact is you're right; it can't remind you a real place because nothing is real on this canvas. The landscape is fake. The artist uses a singular way of working. As lmany contemporary painters take pictures to inspire themselves, Amy Bennett, makes, for every canvas, a three dimensions model and she creates her own landscape. She makes the water, the trees and the figurines. She goes much more beyond these elements. Actually, she's enough inspired that she creates also the day light, a bright or delicate light that reflects on and in the trees, on the lake. She paints trees in the manner of a sculptor. You "feel" the volume of each tree, impressive. To finish, she uses a very thick lacquer coat that put distance between you and the landscape, to keep the mystery of it, like a secret. |

Martin Kippenberger at the MOCA
| | One of the most significant and influential artists of our time, German artist Martin Kippenberger (1953?97) produced a complex and richly varied body of work from the mid-1970s until his untimely death in 1997 at the age of 44. Kippenberger's life and work were inextricably linked in an exceptional practice that centered on the role of the artist in the culture and within the system of art. With references, subjects, and sources as wide-ranging and diverse as his production, his oeuvre examined and expanded upon that role as he also cast himself as impresario, entertainer, curator, collector, architect, and publisher. The first major retrospective exhibition to be mounted in the United States, Martin Kippenberger: The Problem Perspective includes key selections and bodies of work from Kippenberger's entire career: paintings, sculpture, works on paper, installations, multiples, photographs, posters, announcement cards, and books.

Here in LA, on display new pieces from the artist collection
The show is not the same as in Paris. We don't feel the dramaturgy of the pieces shown because there is no scenario intention from the curator. In the mind of the sculptor each piece has a special meaning, family meaning, sexual meaning, father meaning, mother meaning that we don't even feel here.

ABROAD Through April 24th, 2009 / New York / USA"AMERICAN WALL NUT" DAVIDE BALULA at Fake Estate

| | It seems that New York inspires the artist who multiplies the exhibits, wonderful !
"Emptied of its usual markers of labor and display, the interstitial space of the transfigured, hardly150 square foot exhibition venue evokes, with its parqueted floor and bare walls, an abandoned domestic space. In the back of the room, as though the perpendicular planes of the floor and the wall had folded onto each other and left a trace of their unlikely encounter, fragments of walnut lumber encrusted in the dry wall and strips of plaster inlayed in the parquet floor mirror each other in a strict inversion of matter.
The reflective motif reveals itself as inherently site-specific, as it is determined by the modular relationship between the wood paneling and the general structure of the ground it covers. Paradoxically, despite its three-dimensional embodiment, Balula's geometric intarsio prevails as an essentially bi-dimensional delineation: the artist draws here with space, like others draw with ink or graphite.

In order to stress the close relationship of the works with their setting, Morellet will also create a site-specific intervention in the large new exhibition room on the mezzanine floor: the spatial dimension and physical and perceptive involvement of the spectator as part of the surroundings, of which he or she experiences a special and specific moment, are crucial aspects of his poetic practice. The forms and balances of Morellet's interventions always involve a variety of elements, such as the graphic sign, sculpture, painting and installation, and are founded on rational and cognitive systems that are the basis for their coming into being and construction. The rationality of their development is grafted onto the emotivity of the particular moment when they are observed: the works are formed in space as a means for capturing the energy that pervades the surroundings, never failing to open themselves up to emotivity that is entirely free and varies with the endless coming into being of time. Created from 1963 onwards, Morellet's neon works are a means for inscribing his forms - now consisting of vital light - more forcefully in the occurrence of events. The artist's approach to life - allowing him to create a vibrant and dialogical relationship with it - involves participation in the events of the world and their coming into being, which takes the form of specific and always unique fragments. Works representative of Morellet's output from the 1950s to the 80s will be on display in the gallery's other spaces."
