Great retrospective of a living artist. The photographer takes every time a special angle. He chooses the best of what natural light can offer, clearness and brightness. The exhibition is chronological, per locations where he liked to shoot. It mixes all together different aesthetics even though his best pictures are certainly those more abstract. A classification per type of aesthétic would have been more interesting to enhance his wide range. Très belle rétrospective d'un artiste vivant. Le photographe prend toujours un angle special. Il choisit le meilleur de ce que la lumière peut lui offrir, la clarté et l'éclat. L'accrochage chronologique et par lieu, est intéressant mais il aurait mérité que l'on sélectionne les photographies plutôt par genre esthétique, ce qui aurait mis en valeur la large palette de l'artiste, notamment le côté plus abstrait de certaines photos. All things Parr...Yes... Actually it is by Martin Parr & whith Martin Parr. He's never been so far in that idea of representation of a celebrity: himself. I bet Warhol would have done the same!! BCh Voilà une exposition bien étonnante de Martin Parr où il se représente sous forme de statuettes (mexicaines) dans des cadres au velours violet qui célèbrent habituellement un proche défunt. Une quinzaine de Martin Parr sont accrochés sur tous les murs de la galerie, plus des assiettes à son effigie et toutes sortes d'autres objets avec sa représentation. Voilà une exposition aui va jusqu'au bout de cette idée de la représentation de soi même que n'aurait pas renié Warhol! BCh

Representing the diversity and uniqueness of the Los Angeles community, the exhibition highlights important works from legendary L.A. artists who remain vital and influential alongside those emerging from renowned local art schools, visionary artists associated with various street cultures and subcultures, and crossover artists connected to performance, music, and film" J'aimerais pouvoir dire que c'est l'exposition à ne pas rater... malheureusement les choix ne sont pas bons. Même les icones comme Ed Ruscha ou Ed Moses n'ont pas leur meilleur ici. Que dire alors des choix des jeunes talents de la scène de L.A. ? pseudo contemporain, pseudo abstracto-pop-ou-je-ne-sais-quoi. Il faut bien le dire c'est décevant et absolumemnt pas représentatif d'une autre scène de Los Angeles, tant côté Artistes que Galeries, qui sont d'un tout autre niveau, certes plus subtil, moins tape à l'oeil sans doute. Mais l'art ne doit pas se réduire à une simple image tape à l'oeil. B.Ch Moca clik here

"The Artist's Museum" Part II, at Geffen



This part is much more interesting than the other at MOCA grand avenue. You see interesting and creative  works by artists living in L.A. I would like to name here: among the best Martin Kersels and his funny-heavy-piano, Walead Beshty and a meaning full glass box called "Fedex....", Ruben Ochoa and his "Pallets wall" and a great instalation by the mythic music/video group Devo. Also a don't forget name is Andrea Zittel and her strange process in art work, Morgan Fisher and his cinemascope mirror, as well as the installation by Meg Cranston. Don't forget also the "galerie de portraits" by Mike Kelley (who just made a charming mistake with the name of poet Rimbaud who's called Rim Baud instead of Rimbaud!) and last but no least is Paul Mc Carthy and his amazing protean sculptures B.Ch

this one is a must be seen exhibition for sure!

(a Paris-based group of painters active during the mid-1960s consisting of Daniel Burren, Mosset, Michel Parmentier, and Niele Toroni). Mosset and the other members of B.M.P.T. sought to question authorship and democratize art through "radical procedures of deskilling". For this exhibition, Mosset will exhibit his monochromatic paintings in addition to motorcycles painted and customized by Vincent Szarek and Jeffrey Schad, as collaboration has remained an integral aspect to his artistic practice" Justin Izbinski Au debut c'est un grand eclat de rire. Puis l'on reste et l'on comprend. On comprend le raffinement des peintures sur ces motos qui ont procede a une sorte de transfert; ce qui etait suppose etre sur les toiles se retrouve la, sur la fourche de ces motos. Du coup, ces toiles sont comme videes, exsangues, il ne leur reste plus qu'a recommencer l'histoire de la peinture... Olivier Mosset nous surprend toujours. B.Ch

« (...) It's true that things can change right up to the last minute. My working method always leaves questions open to renegotiation ? right up to the eve of the opening. I prepare a climax, I work up the texts, images, and ideas that comprise my desire. I have a few pieces that require early production and that provide, in a way, the framework for my plans, but then I re-weave the whole mesh, making it more complex, for as long as time allows, until it constitutes a corpus, a story, or a unit ? which I then undo. The final weeks of assembly, tension, and total immersion in the project are like a chemical solution ? everything precipitates out in a complex harmony. It's a little like mapping an unknown land, where I draw the main outlines before sprinkling it with the islands that make up the archipelago. This question of a project that is being endlessly defined as time constantly spins out brings another type of temporality to mind ? the media time-frame. The press releases announcing my shows, which are sent out before the period of final adjustment, can sometimes turn out to be null and void in certain respects. "Cubs" Oleg Dou last works at Espace Art22

Look attentively at the work on the left is a photograph. Technically extremely well done photographs. This later series by the Russian photographer reminds us the photographs by Ann Geddes who shoots babies in costumes, but here the children have grown and the work has grown too. If the technique is perfect, in this case, what I like the most is the process. We should say there are actually two works: one is the shooting and the other is before it. It consists in choosing the model, then choosing the costume, the make up. The photographer paints his topic for real before he makes his photograph. We have the same process with the painter/photographer Boo Ritson. But here, because the models are children  it adds some strangeness that makes us not comfortable with. B.Ch. The Big Picture, taken from the title of a work by Jason Rhoades, sets the tone for an exhibition of film and video installations that confronts viewers with the range of modes of operation adopted by cinematic installations.  The presentation revolves around 12 installations displayed in a specially designed architectural setting (Stadler Prenn Architekten, Berlin) that is designed to emphasize the spatial and physical aspects of the film projections. "Secrets & Lies" Stefana McClure at Josée Bienvenue Gallery

Fragmentation, obliteration and reconstruction of information characterize McClure's work. Texts, in the form of declassified government documents and Internet searches are sliced and rejoined as continuous lengths of paper yarn and are then knitted. Translating, transposing and decoding the synesthetic structure connecting text and image, Stefana McClure unveils and reveals the fabric of secrets and lies that we are subjected to on a daily basis. The exhibition includes a series of six drawings made from documents relating to "enhanced interrogation techniques" including water boarding of prisoners in CIA custody. These heavily redacted documents, obtained and released by the American Civil Liberties Union under the Freedom of Information Act, are available as PDF files on the Internet. Mari Eastman's paintings, drawings and sculptures willfully engage the fictions of the world around us.  Where that world is consumerist, her art is consumptive....Eastman's art takes us down a logical path that easily segues from images of  pets and models to images of the appartniks of money and power and the destructions of  war. Intéressante exposition de deux excellents peintres abstraits de Los Angeles, Charles Christopher Hill et Peter Lodato qui dialoguent sur les murs de Joe's restaurant sur la mythique et très fashion rue Abbot Kinney de Venice, à trois blocs de l'océan et des dauphins. Ni l'un ni l'autre n'a besoin d'exposer ailleurs que dans sa galerie*, mais ce lieu propose une alchimie qui fait recette et attire les plus grands noms de la peinture, comme les collectionneurs du « tout L.A ». Il n'y a encore pas très longtemps c'était Ed Moses et Ed Ruscha qui accrochaient leurs toiles. Charles Christopher Hills présentent deux grandes toiles sobres et puissantes en noir et blanc qui s'inspirent de motifs du Zaïre et quatre papiers dont les motifs, ici réduits à l'essentiel, sont extraits des grottes de la Pasiega, en Espagne. Peter Lodato montre quant à lui de petits formats, largement encadrés de blanc, contenant deux rectangles qui, selon l'association de couleurs qu'il choisit, passent tantôt de l'état de plein à celui de vide. "In Courts, Elliott Wilcox photographs racquet, squash, and traditional 'Real Tennis' courts absent any games or players. With an interest in discovering the details that are overlooked, Wilcox focuses on the graphic qualities of the open spaces with an emphasis on bold, flat colors and formal, linear structures. Wilcox explains, "the vivid stains, ball marks, blood and scratches force the viewer to focus on these details rather then just the courts." His rich colors and simple shapes create a strong exhibition. This is Elliott Wilcox's first solo show at dnj Gallery and in the United States. He has exhibited internationally. His Court series caught the attention of Charles Saatchi, and the famed collector shortlisted Wilcox for his BBC documentary television show, School of Saatchi. Additionally, his work was selected to be part of the exhibition PRUNE- Abstracting Reality at Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam (FOAM). He is the recipient of several awards including a Judges Award at the Nikon Discovery Awards, a New York Photo Award and has only just won a Lucie Award for the Discovery of the Year at the International Photography Awards."

I was skeptic to go to the Geffen to see street art locked up in four walls...... I can assure you, this is the most amazing exhibition I saw since years! I felt the freedom, the importance of artists' meanings. Even the paintings on canvas keep some the subversive, essential meaning. Étant parti de la poésie au milieu des années 70, il est arrivé dans le domaine des arts visuels et s'est efforcé de "nettoyer" tout ce qui était superflu (...) Un segment de son travail, que Martek appelle la "pré-poésie ", réduit ainsi la poésie à l'examen de la matérialité des éléments qui constituent le poème physiquement : les lettres, les formes poétiques (il s'agit très souvent de sonnets), les surfaces, les crayons, etc. De même, Martek rend sensible l'état mental précédant l'écriture de la poésie.""Tout acte de prise en main d'un crayon est un acte d'honnêteté", "Je ne suis pas un poète, car si je le voulais je pourrais l'être", ne sont que des exemples d'une série de slogans dont le thème est "la réévaluation de la poésie."(....) Branka Stipancic Vlado Martek believes a contemporary artist must take a stand with respect to the resources at his disposal. Given that he arrived in the sphere of visual art from poetry, he invested efforts to purify poetry of everything that was superfluous (...) he reduces it to examining the material quality of the elements he uses to achieve the physical feature of a poem: letters, poetic forms (often sonnets), surface, pencil, etc. Martek also raises the level of awareness of a state of mind preparing to write poetry: "Every act of picking up a pencil is an act of integrity" or "I am not a poet because if I want to I could be", are just two in a series of slogans entitled Pre-Valuation of Poetry."(....) Over an eighty year period Shulman not only documented the work of many of the great 20th century architects, but he elevated the genre of commercial architectural photography to a fine art form. After making over 260,000 images, Shulman announced his "retirement" in 1989, but the next twenty years were filled with major museum and gallery exhibitions around the world and numerous books. In 2005, the Getty Research Institute acquired Shulman's archive, but he continued to work for the remainder of his life. Craig Krull Gallery will be opening a major survey of his work on September 10, 2011. This exhibition will include a range of iconic photographs of works by architects such as Neutra, Koenig, Lautner, Frey, and Eames, as well as early images from Shulman's personal files." Voici une nouvee série de Fusain sur papier de Marko Velk dont nous suivons le parcours depuis plus de six ans maintenant. Pour cette série il a encore gagné en force. Il manie le paradoxe avec dextérité en faisant se côtoyer puissance et douceur, narration et abstraction. Plus que jamais un artiste à collectionner"BCh ?I draw and then I think?. In most contemporary art, the idea ? usually a socially conscious one - is rationalized, debated and pre-meditated. It tends to precede, and supersede the visual. But Marko Velk instinctively embarks upon a journey across the page.  In the act of drawing, he unleashes a raft of raw emotion.  His soul, and the web of emotions brooding deep in his unconscious mind, pour, trickle and explode onto the white paper. Marko's art is free from the sights and sounds of modernity that constantly vie for our attention, distracting us from what we truly are. Since he graduated from the ?Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs' in Paris, where etching was his chief technique, Marko's focus and commitment to his chosen medium ? charcoal - has been unshakeable. To Marko, color (or any other media) is neither tempting nor necessary to create the drama that he desires. Indeed, a powerful mystery and suspense resonate from every drawing. It is impossible not to be struck by the artist's amazing dexterity with this slippery medium. The range and quality of his mark-making is astonishing. Set against each other on one page, the black and white marks form a landscape of exquisite harmonies and discords, not unlike a Mozart symphony, creating something that is as beautiful as it is unsettling.

		Here is a new member of Zürcher's team. This new talent has a powerful imagery and his technique made of painted collages bring some interesting strangeness to the narrative. BCh "In Matt Bollinger's recent collages, color invades the paper---paper that is painted, torn, cut, and finally glued and pieced together to produce, with almost staggering precision, a 3D image which is far from hyper-realistic.  The materiality of the paper is palpable; the tears and cut-outs remain visible, resulting in the amplification, too, of the color. Drawing and collage combine in Bollinger's work in the implementation of a vision that suggests the cinematographic sequence shot.  He elaborates the script and operates the camera.  Starting with his own memories as a child in Kansas City, he depicts situations that proclaim truthfulness." "Preemptive Evolution" Nicholas Di Genova at galerie Dukan Hourdequin

"Nicholas Di Genova has developed a unique practice that is as firmly rooted in the utterly fantastical as it is in the deeply scientific. His depictions of hybrid creatures examine wildlife illustration through a Sci-fi lens. Di Genova's highly detailed, and often encyclopaedic investigations of the natural world, yield monstrosities that are the most unlikely of amalgamations ? these can be, for instance, a fusion of cat, goat and snake with cormorant, or tortoise merging into carnivorous plant and even a toad with eight, tentacle-like tongues. His depictions are obviously imagined; but Di Genova's illustrative precision, makes these Audubon caricatures almost plausible." Nicholas Di Genova développe une pratique artistique unique en son genre qui est aussi fermement ancrée dans l'absolu fantastique que dans le profondément scientifique. Ses représentations de créatures hybrides examinent l'illustration de la faune à travers le prisme de la science-fiction. If not, take a look at Mid career artists on the left in the menu This time "Amy Bennett has created several different fictional settings including such public places as a church, a doctor's office, and a theater (...) A doctor's office, for instance, often prompts people to consider their own mortality, perhaps while in a stuffy, crowded waiting room or sitting half naked in a cold, sterile little room. Such situations can be both comical and absurd. The tension between privacy and openness, appropriateness and honesty ties many of the paintings together. ?Working with models helps me to develop narratives and compositions by offering me complete creative control over an imaginary, but believable world.  Developing a scene in 3D helps me to process and extract bits of my experience, whether it is first or second hand, in order to make what is intuitive and dream-like something more concrete and real ? something I can observe real light affecting.  I feel very emotionally connected to a scene and its characters by the time I begin painting.  I try to allow the slight awkwardness of the model world to translate into the paintings to simulate the inadequacies of the memories, dreams and imagination that inspired the images in the first place?." a do not miss exhibition, BCh.

Really interesting exhibition of the last work by the artist from Los Angeles. The work is both show off and very delicate. For example on the red paper (above) the grey you see is actually a damage like burned but controlled. It is a very singular process.

"Le travail de Guillaume Leblon prend ses racines dans une série d'expériences plus ou moins récentes de l'histoire de l'art d'avant-garde, du surréalisme jusqu'à l'arte processuale, de l'arte povera à l'Anti-Form jusqu'au champ plus général du post-minimalisme : de cette façon Leblon met à jour une ligne de l'art qui, en partant de fondements de nature analytique, offre au spectateur un champ d'expérience perceptif plutôt que de créer un dispositif iconographique ou narratif." Alessandro Rabottini, curateur de l'exposition Si Monsieur Rabottini a eu le mérite de l'exposition et du lieu, il n'en demeure pas moins que son texte de présentation dessert le sculpteur. Ce texte est une accumulation de clichés sur la sculpture qui laisse à penser que son auteur découvre ce qu'est la sculpture contemporaine. "Chains Chains Chains" Katharina Ziemke at Galerie Zürcher

Katharina ou l'épuisement du geste : C'est toujours un régal d'apprécier cette artiste toujours aussi talentueuse. Pas un détail ne lui échappe. Ses sujets sont "léchés". Les thèmes sont toujours aussi étranges. Sous l'apparence d'une peinture "traditionnelle/classique" couve une violence qui sort du cadre et nous éclabousse. Il y a une sorte d'acidité du sujet qui nous fait grincer les dents car elle épuise l'idée, la pousse jusqu'à sa limite. Mais elle épuise aussi le geste pictural, le poussant jusqu'à sa limite. L'alchimie sujet/geste produit cette atmosphère étrange qui rend l'oeuvre de Katharina si unique. A voir sans conteste........mais âmes sensibles s'abstenir. BCh.

UNE PENSEE POUR :

Nous tenons ici à témoigner de toute notre amitié à Kazuyo Yamamoto, talent émergent de be-Art depuis 6 ans, que nous avons connu à Paris et que nous continuons de suivre avec attention. C'est depuis New York, où elle vit désormais avec son mari, qu'elle a appris que ses parents étaient confinés dans la zone atteinte. Ils habitent à Ibaraki, 133 miles et près de 3 heures de route de Fukushima, et n'ont eu le droit ni la possiblilté d'en sortir, l'essence étant rationnée et les transports trop chers.
