Channa Horwitz, Language Series   photo: Andreas Klaer
Rhythm and graph paper
by Helmut Schümann

Drawings, compositions and performances of Channa Horwitz in the Brandenburg Art Association.

Why her?
She has dedicated her entire life to represent on a flat paper the sequences of the movement. She has produced an amazing abstract work that became a language that moves and speaks by itself when you look at it. It is a spectacular work! BCh L.A,  April 27th 2010

Ed Moses -Los Angeles-

Why him?
He deserves to be known more than he is in Europe. His abstract paintings are all asking about the identity of art, as: finally is art made for home decoration or is it something else? This is a real question that american paintors should ask more often. BCh, L.A. November 23d 2009

Who is he ?
He is a californian painter, born in 1926, He lives and works in Venice.

Marc Desgrandchamps -French-
Why him?
His subjects are atemporal and multiple on one same canvas to produce, as the artist himself says : "a real fantasy or a fantasy reality". The technique he uses, successive layers of coloured juices, is mastered perfectly. Together he creates an open, questioning creation, that invites the viewers' imagination to diverse locations.

Ron Mueck -australian-

Two Women, 2005.

Glenn Fuhrman Collection, New York

In Bed, 2005.
Mixed media
161.9 x 649.9 x 395 cm
Private Collection

Why him ?
Beyond the perfectly realistic silicon representation of simple characters, Ron Muech has the incredible ability to complete a thorough sociological study. Indeed, each sculpture of his is a concentrate of a whole slice of our society. Themes such as old age, sickness, or loneliness are hinted at in admirable fashion.

Didier Marcel -french-

installation chez Michel Rein 2006
courtesy Galerie Michel Rein

Why him?
For at least two reasons : Didier Marcel is one of the few sculptors that offers a reflection on the manner of expressing all the codes of sculpture in such a pure manner. For instance, the barriers above are complete sculptures, the hight of the display, their spatial positions where the voids bound by different surfaces resonate to "converse" amongst themselves, creating internal movement. Secondly, the installations he displays (above are sketches) that are full of a pure narration as well. Particularly interesting.

Takashi Murakami -japanese-

"Flower ball (3-D)"

Why Him ?
Murakami covers the tracks in the understanding of his art ?far deeper than it seems? as well as in his manner of directing his career ?far from the doomed artist, he is a seasoned businessman?. His art is attractive, pleasant to look at and far more as he is an exceptional colourist. When looking at the pictures above, pay attention to the path your eyes follow, moving quickly to follow the trail the artist created. You can see there is an innate dynamism within the work of art. The picture on the right allows us to add to this dynamism an additional emotional dimension, in the end sad, due to the ratio and organisation of black and white. To not believe appearances is the message of this fabulous colourist.

Untitled #225, 1990 ; The Broad Art Foundation, Santa Monica © Cindy Sherman

Why her ?
Feminine condition most of all mental condition of the women is the principal interest of Cindy Sherman's work : sad, sexy, frightened, adventurer, winner, loser almost all mental representation except happyness. She is always the the person on the photo, lik an actress she disguises herself with make up etc... very gripping.

Why her?
Few painters master their support in such a good way.
Either in small or big format, the artist offers us an unrivalled pulsation in her papers thanks to her drawing lines into which she let the white, the light seep. Absolutely noteworthy.

Why him ?
Gilles Barbier builds a global work, he doesn't set up much exhibitions. He tends to suggest artistic propositions on ourselves, the meaning we give or could give to the existence. A sublime imagination, in which intertowen cruelty and love for the human gender, so imperfect...

Why Him ?
Philippe Ramette's creations and photographs are each a situation of permanent challenge. Mocking gravity, he offers light-hearted, unexpected topics. He unravels the thread of an idea to the source. The size of his prints are always outstanding.

Georges Rousse -french-

"Arles" photographie 2006
courtesy galerie RX Paris clik

Why Him ?
His photographs are not what we think, basic geometrical figures painted on pictures of abandoned places. The scene is first painted to appear as flat, and then photographed. His works need time and attention to understand their workings and object, at the risk of missing the point, a little like with life... Magnificent.

Louise Bourgeois -french, sculptures, installations, drawings etc..-

"spiders" 2001 au Rockefeller Center NY

"Paddle woman" courtesy Cheim&Read Gallery NY
Why her?
A strange, onirical universe where nightmares, dreams, suffering and joy are melt.
Louise Bourgeois is like a mosquitoe going from body to body, she experiences technique after technique.. She is someone looking for novelty, where no one expects her. Surprising.

Why him? because he works on a real artist project..Like all artists at the begining, he wanted his work to be recognized rapidly, and he managed well.. but far from limiting himself to what's commonly accepted, he eventually take the time to realise pieces of an incredible and fragile balance: he is at the border of the too-figurative, of the too-meticulous, of the 'déjà-vu', at the limit of the vulgar, of the mould...But he is nothing of that. One cannot judge a book by it's cover, look with attention, and you'll be astonished by the elegance and the soundness of his pieces.

Why her ? She handles like no one the 'watercolour', gouache or watercolour , risky technique because impossible to correct, no touching up or repentance ! She is interested in the human being, mainly women and kids, and the appaling result is at once tender and coarse.
